The Competency-based Apprenticeship in Primary Care (CAP) Course provides second year medical students with various workshop opportunities throughout the academic year.
Faculty Instructors Needed for Additional CAP Teaching Opportunities:
CAP Case Presentations and SOAP Note Workshop (August)
Overview: Faculty instructor will 1) present a brief overview of effective oral case presentations and components of a SOAP note to a small group of second year medical students (PowerPoint provided) and 2) provide feedback on brief oral case presentations and SOAP notes that students will deliver after viewing videotaped patient encounters and preparing in advance of the session.
CAP Feedback Workshop (October)
Overview: Students will receive an overview of effective feedback and feedback-seeking from the CAP Course Director, Dr. Vicki Hayes. Faculty instructors will 1) facilitate small group discussions related to students’ experience seeking and receiving feedback at their CAP sites and 2) support applying tips learned as students practice giving and receiving feedback from one another based on brief case presentations.
CAP Physical Diagnosis Practice Sessions (August – multiple sessions offered)
Overview: Students will have 60 min session with trained Standardized Patients (SPs) to review the Cardiac, Pulmonary, Abdominal, and Musculoskeletal exams. The SPs will provide feedback to the students based on the approved checklists of skills for each type of exam. There will be two faculty present at each session to provide assistance, clarification, and teaching when the student-SP dyad needs it. This is formative exercise for the students and the faculty will not need to assign grades or provide written feedback. Faculty may sign up for one or more sessions.
