Faculty Host Bio:      

Edwin Ozawa MD, PhD is an Anesthesiologist at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center and an At Large Director for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. He earned his PhD in Medical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed his residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 2015 he was appointed a Fellow of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds the rank of Commander in the US Navy Medical Corps, and wishes he could serve in Starfleet.

Description: At this session, participants will be provided with a rationale for maintaining wellness as an antidote to burnout, and will also be given frameworks for assessing and improving their own levels of wellness.

 

Goal: The goal of this session is to have participants recognize burnout as a growing epidemic among healthcare professionals, and to provide participants several strategies and a framework to increase resilience.

 

Objectives:

By the end of this session, active participants will be able to:

  • Illustrate the magnitude of burnout within the healthcare profession
  • Identify the four domains of well being
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of mindfulness practice
  • Outline the five core principles of stress management developed at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center
